CAMPAIGN #RJustice: Cultivating Accountability
About the #RJustice Campaign
It’s been eight years since the founding of Florida Restorative Justice Association (FRJA) in 2014 when three colleagues decided to center Indigenous wisdom and practice to build safety in communities which provided the foundation for the evidence-based practice of Restorative Justice.
Since that time FRJA has continued to make connections across the nation and to build the restorative justice community across Florida. Now is the time to expand our reach and capacity by increasing awareness about restorative justice practices and inviting a larger contingency to join in the practice and help build a new foundation for cultivating accountability and creating safety. By increasing awareness, growing, and connecting the number of restorative practitioners, we can build a more effective response to violence and harm, while cultivating a culture of accountability.

RJ Talking Points
- Restorative justice (RJ) is a voluntary process that all parties must agree to for RJ to take place.
- RJ can be proactive ("culture-building") or remediative (to address harm). In the remediative context, it may happen at any point after a conflict/harm/crime has occurred when it is determined to be safe and appropriate.
- RJ has been shown to reduce recidivism, increase satisfaction for all participants, and enhance safety and well-being.
- RJ happens if those involved in a harmful behavior (crime) acknowledge responsibility for their behavior, the impact, and want to take part in a process of accountability to repair the impact.
- RJ is led by trained facilitators.
- RJ’s outcomes include specific actions and deliverables to make up for the harm created (crime).
- RJ gives a victim and impacted parties an opportunity to ask questions and to understand what has happened and why.
- RJ allows victims and survivors of crime and those responsible to safely communicate.
- RJ Communication can take many forms: letter, recorded interview, meeting in person.
- RJ’s aim is to achieve a healing outcome for all people involved.
- RJ is an evidence-based practice in reducing re-offense when done successfully.
- RJ transforms punishment to accountability which is proven to be a more effective response.
