2023 Down South Restorative Justice Conference

Recognizing and Regulating ourselves as a Prerequisite for Restoring Relationships with others!

The Peaceful Leadership Institute’s CEO, Gigi Gutierrez, will provide an overview of PLI’s Leadership Model, which is restorative in nature. The Peaceful Leadership Institute’s model is a new method of leadership that brings a collaborative approach to balance power within hierarchy social systems. PLI centers around three Primary Pillars: Psychological Safety, Trust, and Inclusion. These pillars are the foundation for leaders to cultivate in any relational system. Our model also includes five Core Competencies: Patience, Engagement, Appreciation, Curiosity, and Empowerment. P.E.A.C.E. These are the skills and attitudes that embody a Peaceful Leader. These directly refer to humans' basic psychological needs when acting as members of a system or organization.

The United States alone has reported the loss of 57% of staff due to feeling disrespected at work (Pew, 2021). Globally, 874,000 employees are estimated to take sickness absence each year as a result of conflict, at an estimated cost to their organizations of £2.2 billion (Acas, 2021).We are losing valuable staff and funding due to interpersonal conflicts! These statistics cover data from settings such as educational institutions, judicial systems, private and not-for-profit work environments.Leadership style and effectiveness cause a direct impact on team engagement, employee retention, organizational innovation, and productivity. In more than 90% of workplace conflicts, poor leadership has been shown to play a significant role. Why am I sharing this? Because Peaceful leadership training is sustainable as a direct result of needs being met in all human systems. PLI directly connects with RJP as both enterprises focus on providing leaders of all human systems with the fundamentals of building peaceful and productive relationships through conflict resolution approaches. The title to this workshop is: Recognizing and Regulating ourselves as a Prerequisite for Restoring Relationships with others. Overall the focus of this specific workshop will be on self-awareness and self-regulation as the prerequisites for practitioners in the field of Restorative Justice.

Restoring relationships plays a big role in restorative practices, which is a pivotal component to being a Peaceful Leader. Self-awareness and Self-Regulation are 2 prerequisite skills for restoring relationships. Generally most people believe that they are self-aware, however true self-awareness is a rare quality in which the need to enhance is a lifelong learning journey. Everyone has a fundamental idea of self-awareness, the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection. The Basic Principles of Restorative Practices/Justice are: Relationship, Respect, Responsibility, Repair and Reintegration. The more we understand our emotional experiences and stress responses, the better our chances of maintaining effective communication during times of conflict/stressful situations. These skills of self-awareness and self-regulation are vital practices towards restoring relationships and creating a peaceful work environment. This workshop will walk participants through the basic psychology of conflict, or situations that need restoring, and offer tools to look deeper into unmet needs. Interactive exercises and self-reflections will give participants an opportunity to shift perspectives focusing on their behavior and how it relates to restoring relationships or transforming conflict dynamics.

In furtherance of this mission, Gigi conducted presentations and training on restorative practices and conflict resolution. Her daily interactions consisted of working directly with politicians, community leaders, judges, assistant district attorneys and CEOs.
Additionally, Gigi is well-disciplined, emotionally intelligent, and proudly spent the past few years as an effective, transformational leader in the advancement of social justice.
Gigi’s unique background of advanced conflict resolution training, leadership skills and almost ten years of legal experience as a certified paralegal will be an invaluable resource in establishing rapport and maintaining collaborative relationships with the stakeholders you’re currently aligned with.
